If you are looking to explore the great outdoors with your family, to immerse yourself in history and culture and to make an effort to minimize your ecological impact in the process, then you’ve come to the right place.
This site was created to share our experiences as a traveling family of five. Dedicated to simple travel while on a shoestring budget, we wanted to show to our readers that you don’t have to leave your values at home when you hit the road and that the size of your family shouldn’t limit your experiences.
We often feel the need to take a break from our lives, so we spoil ourselves with all-inclusive holiday packages in an attempt to enrich our vacation. However, I have always found that indulgence often leaves me feeling guilt ridden as I think of all the money spent and waste incurred in the process. Once it’s all over, you’re left with a hangover of sorts as you struggle to readapt to your routine.
Taking the time to explore, allowing time for all your senses to be completely immersed , by which you can forge lasting memories rather then those we can only recall.
The other important reason in creating ‘my green sneakers’ was to inspire larger families to travel. Most packages and ticket deals are limited to parties of 2 adults and 2 children. Accomodations can be tricky and finding ways to stretch the food budget without succumbing to the lure of fast food convenience, can all pose challenges. If you are open to taking a more modest approach to your travels you can save a lot on accommodations and meals. For example; camping, cooking and preparing your own food can drastically reduce your costs, so you can spend more on extracurricular activities.
You might be wondering why the ‘about us’ page reads ‘take two’. Well, that’s because this is our second edition. As we’ve grown with this site, so has our understanding of how we want to be presented. Looking back on the original about page, we were very cautious at being too personal, politically correct, used a lot of buzz words and were a little too matter of fact. Our goal is to pursue the contrary and to bring it back down to the basics. As we continue to highlight our travel experiences, we want to ‘share’ our passions, our frugal finds and even our challenges along the way.
We would like to invite you to review our travel logs, read our articles and watch our video blogs that we have compiled so far. While mainstream travel options are not only expensive, they often lack substance and are typical and generic in nature. We want to bring to the reader the true essence of the places we visit, while shying away from gas powered or electronic entertainment such as ATV’s, seadoo’s, arcades or movie theaters. We invite people to invest in experience rather then quick thrills and temporary distractions.
While traveling, this year we will be writing a daily parents journal, keeping our readers posted on what we see on the road. We will also have a kids journal where our boys will be writing about their own experience, offering a child’s perspective of our trips.
You are welcome to follow us on our journey or simply to inquire about our ‘frugal finds’ for large families, highlights of specific regions or unique travel suggestions.
By visiting these destinations you are helping to support small towns and businesses while allowing them to keep their authenticity. Please leave a comment, it let’s us know you’ve dropped by.
Take the path less travelled, there’s often more to see!
